Practical notes on ResetSeqNumFlag

ResetSeqNumFlag = Y on a Logon tells the counterparty to reset both sides' sequence numbers to 1.

  • The Logon that carries 141=Y has MsgSeqNum 1, and the acceptor answers with its own Logon carrying 141=Y and MsgSeqNum 1.
  • It is used for an agreed daily reset, or to recover when the two sides' sequence numbers can no longer be matched.
  • Messages in flight at the time of the reset are not recovered, so open orders should be reconciled afterwards.

Common mistakes

  • Sending 141=Y on every reconnect during the day, which silently throws away anything not yet delivered.

Changes between FIX versions

  • ResetSeqNumFlag exists from FIX 4.1.
