Practical notes on Symbol

Symbol is the instrument's ticker as the counterparty knows it.

  • Its meaning depends on the counterparty: the same company can be MSFT on one venue and MSFT.O on another.
  • For an unambiguous identifier, send SecurityID (48) with SecurityIDSource (22), for example an ISIN, alongside or instead of Symbol, as the counterparty requires.
  • From FIX 4.4 it sits inside the Instrument component.

Common mistakes

  • A symbol in the wrong convention gets OrdRejReason 1 (Unknown symbol).
