FIX Protocol Tag 58: Text

Practical notes on Text

Text is free text. It carries human-readable reasons on rejects, logouts and order messages.

  • Reject reasons in 58 are often more specific than the reason code, so log and display both.
  • Non-ASCII text goes in EncodedText (355) with EncodedTextLen (354), not in 58.

Common mistakes

  • An SOH inside the text breaks the message into wrong fields.
  • Driving program logic from the wording of 58; it changes without notice.

Tag 58 in each FIX version

Values and message usage as defined in a specific version.

Data type

STRING: Text of printable characters. It cannot contain the SOH delimiter.

Example

58=Order accepted

Illustrative value. In a message, fields are separated by the SOH character (0x01), often shown as | or ^ in logs.
